Often times, a page will not contain the invalid protection template directly, but rather will inherit it. This often happens when a template is semi-protected, but the protection template used for that template is not wrapped in <noinclude> tags. To fix this problem, simply move the protection template within the <noinclude> tags, Theme Documentation Wiki.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Maroon_5&diff=prev&oldid=368544221 as in this example. The pages that link to the template via transclusion will not be removed from this category immediately, depending on the job queue, but it should resolve itself automatically. (Alternatively, you can null edit the page for immediate results.)

Another common cause for pages to be in this category is improper date formats in the expiry parameter of the protection template.
